About

My name is Elias Isquith. I work as a researcher for the The Ezra Klein Show but everything I write here is strictly my own opinion and should not be understood as a reflection of anyone’s views but my own, etc., yada yada.

I have spent my career on one side or the other of the line separating politics and media. Sometimes I’ve worked in communications departments for policy-focused nonprofits, and sometimes I’ve worked for media companies with a political bent.

I’ve been a writer, editor, manager, producer; and throughout all of these different stages I’ve had strong opinions I’ve felt a compulsive need to express in some form or another. This blog — the one you’re reading right now — is the latest manifestation of that urge/pathology.

My politics are left-liberal. If I had a magic wand I’d want a modernized form of social democracy, one where high levels of growth are sought but the ensuing wealth is vigorously and unashamedly redistributed. But I also find the nuts-and-bolts of policy to be less compelling than the human forces that shape and determine it.

Another way to say the same thing is, I’m interested in the mysterious and yet determinative force known as “power.”

Aside from politics, I am a movie nerd; and I hope to use this site to write about movies I’ve seen recently and the ideas they inspired. I tend to prefer to write about movies that are, well, old — or at least old enough that what I write is not a review, per se, so much as a reflection or loosely-connected collection of musings.

I grew up outside of Philadelphia, but I have lived in New York City since 2011. I have a pet dog named Jojo and cat named Charlie and in case either of them are reading this I want you boys to know that I love you very much.
